47일차. 반올림을 표현할 때 사용하는 round up

아래와 같이 "테슬라가 2020년도에 자동차 생산량 목표 50만대를 달성했다"는 CNN 뉴스기사를 읽었습니다. 이 회사로서는 처음이라고 이 기사는 얘기하고 있는데요. "생산된 차량대수와는 조금 다르게 소비자에게 납품완료된 자동차는 499,550 대로 그 동일목표에 조금 못미칩니다. 그래도 총 판매대수는 500,000 대로 반올림 됩니다." 는 기사인데요. 이 기사에서 반올림이라는 의미로 사용된 round up에 대해서 공부해보려고 합니다.

New York (CNN Business)Tesla (TSLA) hit its goal of building a half-million cars in 2020, a first for the company, it reported Saturday.
The completed deliveries to customers, which is slightly different from the production figure, fell just short of that same goal as it delivered 499,550 cars. That sales total rounds up to the 500,000 target, though.

숫자를 어림잡아 얘기할 때 반올림해서 많이 표현하는데요. 이 때 round up 을 이용하여 반올림하다는 의미로 사용할 수 있습니다. 반대로 버림을 나타낼 때는 round down을 사용합니다. 참고로 round up은 반올림하다라는 의미 외에도 모으다를 나타낼 때도 사용됩니다.


round up
It can mean several things:
1. collect/herd
2. (when estimating a number) "round" to a more even number


round down
(when estimating or telling a number value) "round" to a lower more even number


e.g.) 
Go round up the sheep in the yard. 
가서 마당에 있는 양들을 모아와.

She rounded up her children and they left the playground.
그녀는 아이들을 모아서 놀이터를 떠났다.

Round up to 10 by making 7 into 10.
7에서 10으로 만들어서 10으로 올려봐.

To round down from 21 make it 20.
21에서 내림을 해서 20으로 만들어.

7.9 can round up to 8.
7.9는 8로 반올림할 수 있다.

6.1 can round down to 6.
6.1은 6으로 내림을 할 수 있다.

There was 194 people here today so that rounds up to 200. 
오늘 여기에 200명으로 반올림할 수 있는 194명의 사람들이 있었다.
