: "제일 손해를 보다"는 뜻이다. 
두 사람이 막대기 하나를 서로 차지하려고 하는데, 아무래도 짧은 쪽(short end)을 쥔 사람이 불리하지 않겠는가.

지팡이의 손잡이 부분이 아니라 끝을 잡은 걸 비유적으로 해석한 말이다.

미국 제26대 대통령 시어도어 루스벨트가 이 표현의 저작권자다. "Speak softly and carry a big stick; you will go far(말은 부드럽게 하되 방망이를 갖고 다녀라. 그러면 성공할 것이다)." 1901년 9월 2일 미네소타 연설에서 한 말이다. 루스벨트는 옛 서부 아프리카 속담이라는 이 말을 즐겨 썼으며, 국내외 정책에서 그대로 실천에 옮겼다.

last는 "(제화용의) 골", 는 뜻이다. 
기원전 350년경 그리스의 화가 아펠레스(Apelles)는 자신의 그림을 전시해놓고 몰래 숨어 관람객들이 그림 앞에서 하는 평을 듣기를 좋아했다. 그 평이 타당하다고 생각하면 그림을 수정하기도 했다. 어느 날 cobbler(구두장이)가 그림 앞에서 그림 속의 신발에 문제가 있다고 비판했는데, 이 말을 들은 아펠레스는 그 비판이 타당하다고 생각해 그림을 수정했다. 다음 번 전시회에 또 나타난 구두장이는 이번에는 그림 속 인물의 인체(人體)에 대해 비판을 하는 게 아닌가. 이 비판엔 동의할 수 없었던 아펠레스는 숨어 있던 곳에서 나타나 구두장이에게 이렇게 외쳤다. "Cobbler, stick to your last(구두장이 양반, 자신의 본분에나 충실하시오).”
