across / across from = opposite

across 는 뒤에 건너는 대상이 나오는게 특징이다.
1. The post office is across the street. 우체국은 길 건너에 있다.
여기서 across의 목적어는 길이다.



반면 opposite은 마주보고 있는 대상이 나오는게 특징이다.
2. The post office is opposite the station.  우체국은 역 맞은 편에 있다.



그리고 opposite은 across from 의 의미다.
3. The post office is across from the station.



따라서 2번과 3번은 같은 뜻이다.
사실 3번문장도 따지고보면 The post office is across the street from the station.의 의미다.

하지만 정보의 가치가 적은 street는 생략한 것이다. 한국어도 마찬가지다.
굳이 거창하게 우체국이 길건너 역맞은편에 있어라고 말하기보다는 그냥 역맞은편에 있어라고 할 경우엔 across from만 쓰는 것이다.

다시한번 말하지만 across와 across from은 다른 의미다. across from의 의미와 같은 건 opposite이다.
