관계 형용사, 관계대명사의 해석 - what +명사 / which +명사 & 접속사의 의미

※ 관계 형용사     

 

1. 관계 형용사란 관계사가 뒤에 명사를 취해 형용사적으로 쓰이는 경우를 말하며 <관계대명사의 형용사적 용법>이라고 불리기도 한다. 관계 형용사의 용법에는 다음의 네 가지가 있다.

 

① 【 what＋명사 = all the 명사＋that ... 】

② 【 whatever＋명사 = all the 명사＋that ... 】

③ 【 which＋명사 = any 명사＋that ... 혹은 ... and the 명사 ... 】

④ 【 whichever＋명사 = any 명사＋that ... 】

 

a)

I’ll lend you what few books I have on the subject.

I’ll lend you all the few books (that) I have on the subject.

그 주제에 관해 내가 가지고 있는 책이 비록 얼마 되지는 않지만 뭐든 빌려주겠다.

 

I gave him what comfort I could.

=I gave him all the comfort (that) I could

그를 위로하기 위해 내가 할 수 있는 일은 다했다.

 

 

b)

Whatever orders he gives are obeyed.

=All the orders (that) he gives are obeyed.

그가 내리는 모든 명령에 복종한다.

 

 

c)

Adopt which idea you like.

=Adopt any idea (that) you like.

뭐든 마음에 드는 안(案)을 채택하라.

 

We spent two days in the cave, during which time we could eat nothing.

=We spent two days in the cave, and during the time we could eat nothing.

우리는 동굴에서 이틀을 보냈는데, 그동안 아무것도 먹지 못했다.

 

The doctor told her to take a few days’ rest, which advice she followed.

=The doctor told her to take a few days’ rest, and she followed the advice.

의사가 그녀에게 며칠 쉬라고 말했고, 그녀는 의사의 충고를 따랐다.

 

 

d)

Take whichever picture you like.

=Take any picture (that) you like.

마음에 드는 사진 아무거나 가져라.   

 

 

 

2. 관계 형용사 whatever, which, whichever는 양보 개념의 부사절을 만들기도 한다.   

a)

Whatever results may follow, I’ll try again.

어떤 결과가 나오든 나는 다시 시도할 것이다.

 

b)

Go which way you please, you will end up here.

어떤 길을 택하든 너는 결국 여기로 오게 될 거야.

 

c)

Whichever side wins, it will not concern me.

어느 편이 이기든 난 상관없다.           

 

 

 

 

 

※ 관계대명사의 해석   

 

관계대명사는 형용사절을 이끎으로써 결국 두 개의 문장을 이어주는 역할을 한다. 이때 문맥에 따라 접속사의 의미를 첨가해 해석하는 것이 자연스럽다.    

 

a)

This hotel, which stands on a hill near the sea, commands a fine view. <because>

이 호텔은 해안 언덕 위에 서 있어서 전망이 좋다.

 

b)

They thought him dull, which he was not. <but>

그들은 그를 바보로 여겼으나 실제로는 그렇지 않았다.

 

c)

‘Make haste slowly’, which may sound strange but it is true. <although>

‘천천히 서둘러라 [급할수록 천천히 하라]’라는 말은 이상하게 들릴지는 모르지만 사실이다.

 

d)

We have discussed our educational system as if it had no bearing on our society in which and for which education is carried on.

우리는 우리의 교육제도가 사회와 아무런 관계도 없는 듯 논의해 왔다. 교육이란 사회 속에서 사회를 위해 수행되는 것임에도 불구하고.
