√ What do you think is the purpose of a university? Why do you think people attend university?

√ The purpose of a university is to provide higher education and to prepare individuals for their future careers by equipping them with knowledge, skills, and critical thinking abilities.

√ I think high school is a time for students to explore their interests and what intrigues them. So once they identify their preferences, they can further develop that knowledge or further hone those skills at university.

√ High school is a time for exploring interests. University allows for deeper study and skill development in chosen areas.

√ a university plays a pivotal role as a milestone. For example, a student majoring in a department within the liberal arts can broaden their horizons in their chosen field. However the issue is that after completing their major, they face a low likelihood of securing a position in the job market.

√ Critical reasoning and communication skills are also possessed by engineering students, not just those majoring in liberal arts.

√ liberal arts students specialize in literature, philosophy, and social sciences, offering unique perspectives.

√ The issue is that people nowadays tend to perceive universities as training centers, similar to vocational schools.

√ Klaus Schwab; 클라우스 슈바프, The series of industrial revolution.

√ After the second industrial revolution, the role of universities changed. Before that, people around the world considered liberal arts the top priority. In the context of Korea, during the Joseon Dynasty, well-rounded individuals known as '유생' or '선비' who specialized in liberal arts / were highly valued and considered more educated compared to those who specialized in practical skills or, in other words, physical trades.

The shift towards valuing /ˈvæljuːɪŋ/ natural sciences in modern times is justified considering the changing needs of the job markets.

√ Just because the situation is inevitable doesn't mean we can ignore the importance of the liberal arts. The current focus on STEM - Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics - is driven by companies that produce goods, manufacture items, or create intangible services. These industries are heavily reliant on natural sciences and technical fields so there is little emphasis on the liberal arts. Consequently, companies tend to pursues individuals with expertise in engineering and related majors.

√ I'd like to put an emphasis on liberal arts because they can serve as a guiding star for the direction of natural sciences and STEM fields. When natural sciences & STEM fields get lost and lose the way they develop correctly, liberal arts as a lighthouse can shed light on how to escape from where they go wrong.

√ I believe nowadays it is irrational to distinguish between the liberal arts and engineering fields in universities. In the past most liberal arts disciplines were only accessible through universities or similar institutions. However, thanks to advancements in technology, IT, and the internet, it's now much more accessible to acquire knowledge in these areas.

Technology has made knowledge more accessible, blurring the line between academic disciplines.

It's important to embrace their interconnectedness in education.

√ We need to cultivate individuals who are well-rounded in both areas.

Embracing both liberal arts and engineering fields and nurturing well-rounded individuals in both areas can lead to a more balanced and holistic education.

√ This implies that people who major in liberal arts should no longer be laypersons in engineering fields.

Likewise, those who major in engineering fields should no longer be laypersons in liberal arts.

By bridging the gap between liberal arts and engineering, individuals can gain a more comprehensive understanding and appreciation for both disciplines.
