: 공감(共感)은 상대방 입장에 서서 상의의 경험한 바를 이해하거나 혹은 다른 사람의 입장에서 생각해보는 능력이다.[1] 공감의 종류에는 크게 인지적 공감(cognitive empathy), 감정적 공감(emotional empathy)[2]을 주축으로 학자에 따라 여러 세부적인 분류가 존재한다.

: 'sympathy'는 ‘동정과 연민’입니다. 대상에게 거리를 두고 이해하는 겁니다.

: 동정(同情)은 타인의 감정에 대해 공감하는 감정의 정체성을 가리킨다. 공감과는 다르다. 연민의 일반적인 용법으로 불행한 상황과 고난에 대해 감정을 공유할 때 이용되는 것이 많다.

그러나 긍정적인 감정에 대해서도 사용되는 일도 있다.

동정은 정신적, 물질적으로 도와주고 싶은 단계까지 나아가지만 연민은 그렇지 않다.
