조현병은 뇌의 질병으로 지각, 사고, 인지 기능 장애를 특징으로 하는 정신질환이다. 예전에는 정신분열병으로 불렀으나, 이 병명이 사회적인 이질감이나 거부감을 불러일으킨다는 지적에 따라 2011년 조현병으로 이름이 바뀌었다. ‘조현’은 현악기의 줄을 고른다는 뜻으로, 조현병 환자의 모습이 마치 현악기가 정상으로 조율되지 못했을 때처럼 혼란스러운 상태를 보인다는 뜻에서 비롯됐다. 이 질환은 주로 10대 후반에서 30대 중반에 나타나며, 의료기관을 찾아 진료를 받는 환자 수는 30~50대가 많다. 전문의들은 조현병이 약물 등으로 충분히 치료될 수 있는 질환으로 조기 발견해 치료받을 수 있도록 사회적인 관심이 필요하다고 강조했다.

• Ripley syndrome
: 리플리 증후군(Ripley Syndrome)이란 자신의 현실을 부정하면서 실제로는 존재하지 않는 허구의 세계를 진실이라 믿고 상습적으로 거짓된 말과 행동을 반복하는 반사회적 인격장애라고 부르는 대한민국의 신조어이다. 미국의 소설가 퍼트리샤 하이스미스가 지은 소설 《재능 있는 리플리 씨》(The talented Mr. Ripley, 1955)에서 따온 말로 '리플리병'이나 '리플리 효과'라고 불리기도 하지만 실제로 의학계에서 병명으로 사용되는 말은 아니다.
