2. 의미변화가 생길 때의 동명사와 to부정사

동사+동명사 또는 to부정사

능동으로 수동의미를 나타낼 때	need, deserve, want, require
과거성(동명사)과 미래성(to부정사)	forget recall, regret, remember
기타	try, stop

※ 실제로 to부정사와 동명사 사에 다른 의미의 차이를 묻는 경우는 없으므로, to부정사와 동명사가 모두 사용될 수 있음을 알고 있으면 된다.

e.g.)

Your car need repairing. (수동)

Your car needs to be repaired. (수동)

I always forget to lock the door. (해야 할 일)

I will never forget meeting Dr. Stowel in L.A. (과거에 일어난 일)

 

Ref) 일반적으로 require은 to부정사를 목적어로 취하지 않는다.

cf) 단, 예외의 경우가 있다.

Ref) 많은 동사들이 또 다른 동사를 목적어로 취할 때, Ving나 to 부정사 중 한가지 형태만을 취하는 것이 일반적이다.

 

 

 

2. 동사 + 목적어 뒤에 ‘to 부정사나’ 나 ‘전치사+동명사’가 올 때,

동사+목적어+to부정사

동사+목적어+전치사+동명사

Trimesters allow students to graduate early.

There are two possible structures after these verbs. Compare:

verb + -ing (without an object)	verb + object + to...
● I wouldn’t recommend staying in that hotel	I wouldn’t recommend anybody to stay in that hotel.
● She doesn’t allow smoking in the house	She doesn’t allow us to smoke in the house

 

Compare these examples with (be) allowed (passive):

● Smoking isn’t allowed in the house

● We aren’t allowed to smoke in the house
