※ "as well as"의 역할

1. "In addition to" 의 의미 (일종의 구전치사, 또는 a subordinating conjunction로 보기도 함) ;

 • Running is healthy as well as making you feel good.

 • He broke the window as well as destroying the wall.

 • She draws as well as designing clothes.

 

 

When we put a verb after as well as, we usually use an 'ing form'.

 • As well as verbally abusing his wife, he hit her. (= He not only hit his wife, but also abused her verbally.)

  (NOT As well as he verbally abused his wife, he hit her.)

 • He acted in the play as well as directing it. (= He not only directed the play, but also acted in it.)

 

 

If the main clause has an infinitive clause, an infinitive without to is possible in the clause introduced by as well as.

 • I have to cook breakfast as well as get the kids ready for school.

2. "as 원급 as" 의 의미 ;

 • She sings as well as she plays the piano.  (그녀는 피아노를 치는 것 만큼이나 노래를 잘 부른다)

 • cf) She sings as well as playing the piano. (그녀는 피아노를 칠 뿐 아니라 노래도 부른다)

→ 요기서는 as well as는 구전치사, 또는 a subordinating conjunction ( ~ 뿐만 아니라)로서 역할임.

 

 

3. 제한적인 "and" 의 의미 ; (주로 "명사와 명사", "동사구와 동사구"의 연결만 하고, finite clause는 연결하지 않음)

 • We offer electronic toys as well as rent out video games. (= O)

 • Suji is pretty as well as smart (▲ unnatural)

  → Suji is pretty and smart (= O)
