: 정상참작; Mitigating은 형을 줄여주는 요소를 의미
e.g.) 
There were mitigating circumstances in his case.
→ 그의 경우에는 정상참작할 만한 사정이 있었다.

→ 법원은 정상참작 사유로 인해 형량을 감경했다.

: 정상참작; Extenuating은 특정 행동이 덜 심각해 보이게 만드는 요소
e.g.) 
The judge considered extenuating circumstances before making a decision.
→ 판사는 판결을 내리기 전에 정상참작할 사정을 고려했다.
