이 단어들은 모두 어떤 일이 일어나는 것을 보는 사람을 나타낸다.

• witness: 목격자; (법정에서 증언을 하는) 증인:
Police have appealed for witnesses to the accident.
경찰이 그 사고의 목격자들에게 호소해 왔다.


• audience: (연극ㆍ음악회ㆍ강연 등의) 청중[관중]; (동일한 프로ㆍ책ㆍ영화 등의) 시청자[독자 / 관람객].
Ref) audience는 영화나 음악회를 관람하는 사람들을 지칭할 수도 있지만, 책이나 신문의 독자, 라디오 및 TV의 시청자도 의미할 수 있음을 알아두자. 또한 집합적 의미를 갖는 명사로 앞에 부정관사를 붙여 an audience로 표현하더라도 여러 명의 사람을 뜻한다는 것도 알아두자.

구경꾼들이 무리 지어 충돌 현장에 모여들었다.


• passer-by: 행인(특히 예상밖의 일이 일어나던 순간에 지나던 사람):
Police asked passers-by if they had witnessed the accident.
경찰이 행인들에게 그 사고를 보았는지 물었다.


• bystander: 구경꾼, 행인:
Three innocent bystanders were killed in the crossfire.
죄 없는 행인 세 명이 그 십자 사격으로 목숨을 잃었다.
